Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year. I am so excited you're here! You've chosen to take American Sign Language and enter a new world of possibilities. Welcome to Planet Eyeth! My name is Mrs. Gonet and I am a teacher, mom, and wife. I am originally from New York and moved to California 11 years ago. I love running, baking, and spending time with my friends and family. I earned my Bachelors from Keuka College in Keuka Park, New York in Adolescent American Sign Language/Special Education and my Masters from Concordia University in Irvine, California in K-12 Education Administration.
I’m guessing your first question is, “Can the teacher hear?” The answer is, Yes! I am a ‘Hearing’ person. I often choose not to use my voice for the short time we are together in class in order to set an example as you join in using ‘Culturally Appropriate Behaviors’ (CAB). Research has proven that immersion, or being surrounded by and using the target language (language you wish to learn), is the quickest, most natural way to learn a language. When you enter this class, you are entering another world, the “Deaf World”, which I will refer to as “Planet Eyeth”. On Planet Eyeth, the ability to hear and speak using your voice is not necessary; instead, the ability to communicate through sign language and use your eyes are essential. I’ll be your tour guide. Watch closely, copy my behaviors and signs and you’ll be using a new language quickly and proficiently. At the start of class, turn off your voice and start our time together using visual language. Play along with the immersion experience while you are here participating in ASL class activities. You’ll be surprised how quickly your skills will develop! There are exceptions to this and I will make sure it is clear exactly when we will be using spoken English.
I look forward to a great year on Planet Eyeth and hope you are ready to learn American Sign Language and about Deaf culture during our time together via Distance Learning.
